Accademia Gallery Entrance: What to Expect on Arrival
The Accademia Gallery has one main entrance on Via Ricasoli 58, with four distinct lanes. Pre-booked ticket holders use the red lane, walk-up purchases use the blue lane. All visitors pass through security (15–30 minutes in peak season). Arrive 10–15 minutes before your booked time slot, collect your physical ticket at the redemption point first, and have your photo ID ready.
The entrance process at the Accademia Gallery confuses more visitors than it should. There are multiple queues, two different points where you interact with staff before entering the gallery itself, and specific lanes for different ticket types that are not always clearly signed from a distance. Understanding what to expect before you arrive saves time and removes stress from what should be an enjoyable experience.
The Entrance Address
Main entrance: Via Ricasoli 58, 50122 Florence Accessible entrance: Via Ricasoli 60 (a few steps north of the main entrance), with ramp access
The museum is located on the right (east) side of Via Ricasoli when walking north from the Duomo. Look for the distinctive 19th-century facade and the queue of visitors outside. The entrance is approximately 400 metres north of Piazza del Duomo.
Step 1: Arrive Before Your Time Slot
Arrive 10–15 minutes before your booked entry time. This buffer allows you to complete the ticket collection step (if applicable) and reach the correct lane before your slot closes.
If you are more than 15–20 minutes late for your timed slot, staff will attempt to accommodate you in the next available slot — but on busy days this is not guaranteed. Treat your entry time as you would a train departure: punctuality protects your visit.
Step 2: Collect Your Physical Ticket (For Pre-Booked Visitors)
If you have a pre-booked ticket (whether standard timed entry, priority entry, or guided tour), you will have a digital voucher on your smartphone. Before joining the entry queue, you must exchange this voucher for a physical entry ticket at the designated redemption point near the museum.
Where is the redemption point? The exact location varies slightly by ticket operator. Common positions are:
- Directly in front of or opposite the museum entrance on Via Ricasoli
- At a nearby office or stand indicated on your booking confirmation (sometimes a few steps down the street)
- For the Priority Entry & Audio App product: at Via Ricasoli 57, in front of the Carrefour Express supermarket, 15 minutes before your slot. Look for staff wearing a yellow vest with an ACCORD ID badge.
Your booking confirmation will specify where to go. Read it carefully the evening before your visit rather than on the morning of.
What to show: Your digital voucher (on your smartphone), and valid photo ID. Staff will scan your voucher and issue the physical entry ticket in exchange.
When to collect: Up to 15 minutes before your allocated time slot. Do not leave this until the last moment.
Step 3: Join the Correct Entry Lane
The main entrance has four distinct lanes:
🔴 Red Lane — Pre-booked visitors (priority access) For visitors with timed-entry tickets, skip-the-line tickets, guided tour reservations, and the Priority Entry & Audio App. This is where your physical ticket (collected at the redemption point) is scanned by museum staff before you proceed to security.
🔵 Blue Lane — Walk-up ticket purchases For visitors buying entry on the day at the door. This is where the long queue forms during peak season. Walk-up ticket prices are €16 (no booking fee). Queue times range from 15 minutes in low season to 60–120 minutes during summer.
🟢 Green Lane — Large guided tour groups Reserved for organised groups with pre-arranged block entry. If you are on a standard small-group guided tour, use the red lane.
♿ Accessible Lane Located at Via Ricasoli 60, a few steps north of the main entrance. Step-free access with ramp. Staff assistance available. Visitors with disabilities and one companion receive free entry and priority access.
Step 4: The Security Check
After your ticket is scanned at the red lane, you join the security queue. Every visitor — regardless of ticket type or booking status — must pass through this check. It cannot be skipped.
What happens: Bags go through an X-ray scanner. Visitors pass through a metal detector. Secondary hand-wand checks may follow if the detector alerts.
How long it takes: – Early morning (8:15–9:30 am): 5–15 minutes – Standard day (9:30 am–5:00 pm): 15–25 minutes – Peak midday (10:30 am–1:30 pm) in summer: 20–30 minutes – Late afternoon (after 5:00 pm): 5–15 minutes
What to have ready: – Your physical entry ticket (scanned again here) – Valid photo ID – Bags within the size limit (40×30×18 cm)
Prohibited items flagged at security: Sharp objects including scissors, knives, and blades are confiscated at the security check and can be collected at exit. Do not bring these.
Step 5: The Cloakroom (If Applicable)
If your bag exceeds 40×30×18 cm, you must deposit it in the free cloakroom before entering the galleries. The cloakroom is located just past the security checkpoint.
What to deposit: Bags over the size limit, backpacks larger than a small day bag, umbrellas (an umbrella holder is available at the entrance to the Sala del Colosso — remember to collect it on exit), and helmets.
What you pay: Nothing. The cloakroom is free of charge.
Collecting your items: Retrieve your bag before exiting the museum. Lost items not collected on the day are held at the museum until the first Tuesday of the following month, then transferred to the City of Florence lost property office.
Large luggage: The cloakroom cannot accommodate suitcases or large rolling bags. If you arrive with significant luggage, you will not be admitted with it and the cloakroom cannot store it. Arrange luggage storage at Santa Maria Novella station before your visit.
Step 6: Enter the Gallery
Once through security and with any oversized bags deposited, you are free to enter the gallery. Audio guides are available for rental (€6) at the entrance bookshop immediately inside the museum.
The main gallery route begins from the entrance with the Hall of the Colossus, continues through the Galleria dei Prigioni to the Tribune (David’s room), and loops back through ancillary rooms. The upper floor — Museum of Musical Instruments and Byzantine galleries — is accessible via lift or stairs.

Common Entry Mistakes to Avoid
Going to the wrong queue. The blue walk-up queue is very visible and sometimes has people directing visitors into it by default. If you have a pre-booked ticket, you belong in the red lane. Ask a staff member if in doubt.
Not collecting the physical ticket first. Some visitors join the red lane with only their digital voucher, without visiting the redemption point. The lane requires a physical ticket. Always collect the physical ticket first.
Arriving with a large bag. The cloakroom cannot store suitcases. If you arrive with one, you will be turned away from entry. Plan luggage storage in advance.
Trusting strangers offering tickets outside. Via Ricasoli attracts unofficial ticket resellers. Buy only through the official gallery website, b-ticket.com/musei, or established booking platforms. Anyone approaching you with “skip-the-line tickets” outside the museum is not operating officially.
Arriving exactly at your slot time. The time on your ticket is an arrival window, not a queue position guarantee. Arriving 10–15 minutes early gives you time for the redemption step without rushing.
Accessibility at the Entrance
The accessible entrance is at Via Ricasoli 60, a few steps north of the main entrance at Via Ricasoli 58. The accessible entrance has ramp access and avoids the steps at the main door.
Visitors with disabilities and one accompanying companion receive free entry and skip-the-line access on all days, including standard paid admission days. No advance booking is required for the accessible lane. Staff assistance is available at the entrance; inform security on arrival if you need additional support.
Complimentary wheelchair loan is available at the information desk inside the museum (no reservation needed, valid ID left as deposit).

Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly is the ticket redemption point?
It varies by ticket operator — your booking confirmation specifies the location. Common positions are directly outside the museum on Via Ricasoli or a few steps north at Via Ricasoli 57. Arrive 10–15 minutes before your slot to allow time to find it.
What if I lose my digital voucher?
Check your email for the booking confirmation. Most platforms allow you to re-download or resend the voucher. Save a screenshot to your phone’s camera roll as backup.
What if I am late for my time slot?
Inform staff at the red lane as soon as you arrive. On quiet days, they can usually accommodate you in the next slot. On busy days, you may face a wait. Build in buffer time and do not rely on flexibility.
Do I need to show ID even with a pre-booked ticket?
Yes. Valid photo ID is required at entry for all visitors. Children should carry ID to prove their age for free or reduced-rate admission.
What if there are technical issues with my digital voucher?
Contact your booking platform’s customer support. Most have a WhatsApp or phone helpline for day-of issues. Screenshot your booking confirmation as backup before leaving for the museum. —
