What to Expect at the Accademia Gallery: Rules & Tips
Expect a metal detector security check (15–30 minutes in peak season), a bag size limit (40×30×18 cm maximum inside the gallery), photography permitted without flash, no eating or drinking inside, and a compact linear museum that takes 60–90 minutes for most visitors. The gallery is fully wheelchair accessible. There is no strict dress code. Toilets and a bookshop are on the ground floor.
Knowing what to expect before you arrive at the Accademia Gallery removes the small surprises that can disrupt a visit — the bag you are asked to leave behind, the queue you did not account for, the rule you did not know about. This guide covers everything from the moment you approach the entrance to the moment you exit.
Arriving at the Entrance
The Accademia Gallery has one main entrance on Via Ricasoli 58/60, with separate lanes for different visitor types. Knowing which lane to use saves time.
Red lane — for visitors with pre-booked timed-entry tickets, skip-the-line passes, and guided tours. Present your voucher or physical ticket here.
Blue lane — for walk-up visitors purchasing tickets on the day. This is the long queue during peak season.
Green lane — for larger guided tour groups with pre-arranged entry.
Accessible lane — step-free access on the right side of the entrance at Via Ricasoli 60, with ramp access and staff assistance available.
Arrive 10–15 minutes before your booked time slot. This gives you time to collect your physical ticket at the redemption point (if applicable) and reach the correct lane without rushing. For full directions to the entrance, see our how to get there guide.
The Security Check
Every visitor passes through a security check before entering the gallery — regardless of ticket type or booking status. This is the one queue that cannot be skipped even with a priority ticket.
What to expect: Bags go through an X-ray scanner. Visitors walk through a metal detector. Staff may conduct a secondary hand-wand scan if the detector alerts. The process is similar to airport security.
How long it takes: 15–20 minutes during standard visiting hours. 20–30 minutes during peak midday periods (10:30 am–1:30 pm) in summer. Much faster early morning and late afternoon.
What to have ready: Your physical entry ticket (collected at the redemption point before queuing) and valid photo ID. Children visiting with a family may need to present ID proving their age for discounted or free entry.
Bag Rules and Cloakroom
The bag rule: Only bags measuring 40×30×18 cm or smaller are permitted inside the gallery. Larger bags, backpacks, suitcases, umbrellas, and helmets must be stored in the free cloakroom near the entrance before entering.
The cloakroom is located just past the security checkpoint. Storage is free of charge. Collect your belongings before exiting — lost items are held at the museum until the first Tuesday of the following month, after which they are transferred to the City of Florence lost property office.
Important: The museum does not have storage facilities for oversized luggage such as suitcases or large rolling bags. If you are visiting the Accademia on the way to or from the train station with luggage, arrange storage at Santa Maria Novella station’s left luggage service (approximately 15 minutes’ walk) before arriving at the gallery.
What you can bring inside: Small handbags, compact backpacks within the size limit, smartphones and cameras (see photography rules below), and a single water bottle up to 500ml.
For a detailed breakdown of the bag policy and dress code, see our dedicated dress code and bag policy guide.
Photography Rules
Photography is permitted for personal, non-commercial use throughout the Accademia Gallery, including in the Tribune in front of David. Flash photography, tripods, selfie sticks, drones, and professional camera equipment are prohibited. Staff monitor the David hall closely and will intervene if prohibited equipment is used.
Allowed: – Smartphone photography – Compact cameras without flash – Video recording in public halls
Not permitted: – Flash photography of any kind – Tripods or monopods – Selfie sticks – Drones or any aerial photography equipment – Professional photo or video equipment
Special exhibitions: Temporary exhibitions may have their own photography restrictions. Look for the camera-slash symbol near exhibition entrances and follow any signage displayed.
Practical note: The skylight above David creates a bright, naturally lit Tribune. Good photographs of the statue are achievable with a smartphone on a standard setting without flash — the natural light is generally sufficient during daylight hours.
Dress Code
There is no strict dress code at the Accademia Gallery. Unlike some Florentine churches, the museum does not require shoulders or knees to be covered as a condition of entry. Comfortable, casual clothing is entirely appropriate.
Practical considerations: The marble floors are hard and the gallery can be cool even in summer due to climate control (approximately 20–22°C indoors). Comfortable, flat shoes are strongly recommended. Large hats that obstruct other visitors’ sightlines in the crowded Tribune are best left outside.

The Museum Layout: What to Expect Inside
The Accademia is a linear museum — the main route flows naturally from the entrance through the Hall of the Colossus, down the Galleria dei Prigioni, and into the Tribune. You will not get lost.
On the ground floor: Hall of the Colossus (Florentine paintings + Giambologna plaster model), Galleria dei Prigioni (Michelangelo’s Prisoners), Tribune (David), Gipsoteca Bartolini (19th-century plaster models), and two bookshops.
On the upper floor: Museum of Musical Instruments, Byzantine and Gothic painting galleries.
The upper floor is accessible by lift or stairs. Access to the upper floor closes at 6:40 pm — 10 minutes before the museum’s main closing time of 6:50 pm.
Re-entry is not permitted once you exit the gallery.
For a detailed room-by-room guide, see our Accademia Gallery map and floor plan article.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
Travel light. Anything over the bag size limit goes to the cloakroom, which adds time on both entry and exit. A small day bag, smartphone, water bottle, and comfortable shoes is all you need.
Arrive on time for your slot. Your timed entry ticket has a 15-minute arrival window. Arriving more than 15 minutes late risks losing your priority lane access on busy days.
Go straight to David first. The natural layout of the museum takes you toward David. On busy days, arriving at the Tribune before the tour groups accumulate gives you more space around the statue.
Slow down at the Prisoners. Most visitors walk through the Galleria dei Prigioni quickly on their way to David. The unfinished Prisoners reward careful attention — particularly the degree to which each figure has emerged differently from the marble.
Do not leave before the musical instruments. The upper floor is consistently quieter than the ground floor, even on the busiest days. The Cristofori fortepiano of 1700 — the oldest surviving piano in the world — is rarely crowded.
Scammers on Via Ricasoli. Ignore anyone outside the entrance offering skip-the-line tickets, last-minute deals, or tour upgrades. The street attracts unofficial resellers. Buy only through the official gallery website or established booking platforms.
